When we first spoke to Tom Ingram, Farm Manager of Sutton Cheney Farms Partnership, as they prepared to build their new 2000 tonne grain store, the focus was clear. The team wanted complete automated monitoring of the store, increased safety of the staff and a system that could manage the grain conditioning systems properly without relying on guesswork.
After a run of successful seasons, we visited Tom earlier this year to catch up and see how the system was performing. While we were there, the cameras were rolling, and he was keen to share his experience using the system.

“We’ve never had a rejection since putting this system in…
I know it’s right.”
That confidence comes from consistent grain condition and a system that’s working in the background. What used to be manual checks and paperwork is now handled through live monitoring. “I can be on the combine and activate sensors on my phone.”
Initial doubts about automation didn’t last. “I let it do its thing… it works far better. It eliminates any human error.” Fans now run only when conditions are right, helping stabilise the store while reducing energy use. It’s also cut down time in the store and improved safety, with far less need to walk the heap.
“If another farmer is thinking about it, just do it…
the benefits outweigh the cost.”
