You can create energy saving low cost crop storage using Pile-Dry Pedestals and Fans to give the fastest crop cooling system and effective ambient air grain drying.

High pressure Pile-Dry fans and high airflow crop ventilation pedestals cool and dry crops faster and more energy efficiently and preserve crop quality in all sizes of store and all bulk stored crops. 

Pile-Dry Fans will cool, dry and condition, long or short term in bulk stores, bins and silos. They have been used with all bulk stored crops – cereals, rape, rice, beans, peas, potatoes, wood chips and many more.

Using Pile-Dry Pedestals and Pile-Dry Fans To Cool Grain

Pile-Dry Pedestals and Fans are the most powerful low volume crop ventilation system available, delivering an airflow of more than 10m3/hour/tonne and, if ambient conditions allow, able to cool grain to below 15°C within 2 weeks of harvest and down to 5°C before Christmas.

To get the best cooling results from Pile-Dry Pedestals and Fans:

  • Use at least one fan per 4 Pedestals
  • Increase this quantity for faster cooling
  • Move the fans between Pedestals as the crop cools
  • Use Automatic Fan Control to save energy and achieve the fastest cooling

Using Pile-Dry Pedestals and Pile-Dry Fans To Dry Grain

Pile-Dry Grain Cooling Fans sustain high airflow at high pressure. This, coupled with the high free airspace in the perforated Pile-Dry Pedestal ducts, means they will dry grain effectively in favourable ambient conditions. There have been examples of drying grain from as high as 35% or, more typically, from 19% to below 15% with no loss of quality.

To get the best drying results from Pile-Dry Pedestals and Fans:

  • Use more fans for faster drying
  • If the grain is above c.18% moisture, use one fan per Pedestal
  • Use Automatic Fan Control to make the best use of dry ambient air when it is available

Which fan do I need? 

Trouble Dry Spear and FTDEB or FTDS Fan

  • The Trouble Dry aeration spear can cool up to 15 tonnes of grain in a 3m square (TDS) or 35 tonnes in an area 5m square (TDEB)

P2 Pedestal and F2 Fan

  • The P2 Pile-Dry Pedestal is for crops stored between 2.5 and 3m deep. It can be extended up to 4.8m if the crop is surcharged
  • One P2 should be positioned in the centre of each 6m x 6m floor area
  • If stored grain is above c.18% moisture move the Pedestals closer together and store no more than 3m deep

P3 and P4 Pedestal and F3 Fan

  • The P3 Pile-Dry Pedestal is for crops stored between 4.5 and 12m deep
  • The heavy duty P4 Pile-Dry Pedestal is for grain stored between 7 and 14m deep in stores where fast overhead filling can exert considerable force. It is 50% stronger to withstand this pressure and has an airflow increased by more than 30%.
  • One P3 or P4 should be positioned in the centre of each 10m x 10m floor area
  • If stored grain is above c.18% moisture move the Pedestals closer together and store no more than 4.5m deep

Some helpful tips

One Martin Lishman agricultural grain cooling fan per four Pedestals is recommended.
Use at least one grain cooling fan per four Pedestals. The fans are moved between Pedestals as cooling progresses
Use more Martin Lishman Agricultural cooling fans for faster, more efficient cooling.
Use more crop cooling fans for faster cooling or for drying, and to make the best use of suitable ambient air when it is available
Hessian sleeves make cooling rape possible with Martin Lishman pedestals and agricultural fans.
The same spacings apply for all crops. Use hessian sleeves for small seeds such as oilseed rape or grass seed
